Jars of Clay - Fact or Fiction


So you think you know a lot about Jars of Clay? Well, here's your chance to prove it with our "fact or fiction, truth or fraud" January 2002 contest. This one's simple. Just read the following statements and then decide whether each is True or False.

QUESTIONS (ANSWERS BELOW)

 1.    In the fall of 1996, Matt and Charlie spent some time in France at a writer's conference, hosted by Sting's manager, Miles Copeland.

 2.   Jars of Clay's second album, Much Afraid, was released September 16, 1997.

 3.    Charlie Lowell is the middle son in a family of five brothers.

 4.    Jars of Clay has had thirteen number one Christian radio singles.

 5.    Matt completed his sophomore year at the University of Syracuse in New York.

 6.   While they both were in high school, Dan and Steve went through the divorces of their parents, which served as a turning point in their Christian walk.

 7.    The song "Truce" from Much Afraid was written by Jars in a laundromat.

FALSE: It was Dan and Steve that attended the writer's conference in France, where they composed "Crazy Times" and "Tea and Sympathy" in collaboration with Mark Hudson and Greg Wells.

 2.   Jars of Clay's second album, Much Afraid, was released September 16, 1997.
TRUE: This release was celebrated with a release concert and party at the Roxy Theatre in Atlanta, GA.

 3.    Charlie Lowell is the middle son in a family of five brothers.
FALSE: Charlie IS the middle son, but in a family of three brothers. He has a younger brother, John, who has plans to study law, and and older brother, Andy, who is a college instructor in New York AND who managed jarsofclay.com for over 5 years.

 4.    Jars of Clay has had thirteen number one Christian radio singles.
TRUE:  And we hope there are a lot more coming down the pike!!

 5.    Matt completed his sophomore year at the University of Syracuse in New York.
FALSE:  Matt completed his sophomore year at the University of Rochester in New York where he was studying English.

 6.   While they both were in high school, Dan and Steve went through the divorces of their parents, which served as a turning point in their Christian walk.
TRUE: Even though personally devastating, God has used these events to allow Dan and Steve to minister to many young people who are going through similar circumstances with their parents.

 7.    The song "Truce" from Much Afraid was written by Jars in a laundromat.
TRUE: YES, "Truce" was the only song Jars ever composed in a laundromat in the middle of Kansas while they were on tour in 1996.

 8.    Steve played the electric guitar for the first time on stage at the Cornerstone Festival in 1997.
FALSE:  Actually, Steve played the electric guitar for the first time on stage in 1996, at the Jesus Northwest Festival in Washington state.

 9.    "Boy on a String" was originally called "The Wildflower Song."
FALSE: Close, but "Boy on a String" was originally called "The Sunflower Song."

10.   Jars of Clay celebrated the release of If I Left the Zoo at a special concert at The Dallas Zoo in 1999.
TRUE: They could actually commune with the animals before and after the show!

TRUE: Steve and Andy together designed and maintained the first jarsofclay.com in 1995 (remember the homepage with the classic pot?), continuing with the second jarsofclay.com, spotlighting the release of Much Afraid in 1997, followed then by the third site with "all that was Zoo." Not only did Andy and Steve maintain jarsofclay.com, they gave their hearts to fans through lasting email relationships and support. Thanks! We love you guys!!

FALSE:  This one was tricky, too. Jars did indeed get honorary college degrees, but it was from Greenville College, where Charlie and Dan attended two years, and Steve attended one year.

13.   The first song Jars ever recorded was "Love Song For a Savior."
FALSE:  The first song Jars ever recorded was "Fade to Grey," written on their dorm floor, (while Charlie was wearing a bandana!) at Greenville College.

14.   Jars have covered the following songs in concert over the years... "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers, "Swingtown" by The Steve Miller Band, and "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys.
TRUE:  And if you've never had the chance to hear some of these cover tunes performed live by Jars, you've really missed a lot!!

FALSE: Jars have always been passionate about preventing the tragedy of child abuse, but their benefits were for the Exchange Club Family Center for Child Abuse in Tennessee.

TRUE:  Yep, "Good Coffee, Strong Coffee," or more familiarly called "The Coffee Song" will forever live on in history!

17.   When Jars are asked the question, "What is the band's overall favorite song?" They always answer, "Unforgetful You."
FALSE:  Actually, "Worlds Apart" is the answer that is given most often when Jars are asked that question. "Worlds Apart" took almost six months to write and took on many different formations as the Holy Spirit led Jars in this worshipful creation.

18.   All four of the Jars are married now except Matt Odmark.
FALSE: Even though Matt has been termed the most elusive Jar, he and Kristin have been married for over three years.

19.   In recent concerts, Dan Haseltine has been known to play the drums, accordion, and the guiro!
TRUE: Dan certainly broadened his instrumental talents while recording If I Left the Zoo, and I'll just bet those talents will be even broader with the release of The Eleventh Hour.

20.   In 1995, Charlie Lowell sported a shoulder length hair style.
FALSE: No, it was Dan Haseltine that piled on the conditioner in 1995 to keep the frizzies from invading his long locks.
