The Strengths of Headstrong

Our little lambs!

For months Jars of Clay fans have awaited Headstrong. Even listed on some of the preliminary track listings for Zoo, Headstrong seemed to be the song that got away… but no longer! Headstrong is now the leading track on Squint Entertainment's new compilation release, Roaring Lambs. The essence of Roaring Lambs comes from the book also bearing its name written by Bob Briner. Briner expounded the notion that Christians should be evident salt and light for Christ not only in their churches and families, but also in the work place, communities and the world!

Headstrong takes a satirical slant toward the individual who is always adept at being politically correct with his appearance, actions and view toward others. Lyrically the song will initially take you off guard, but following a couple of repeats, the listener will find himself evaluating his own worldly convictions as opposed to the And if you follow me ...convictions Christ intends for us. I disagree with one review I've read that labeled the song, a Much Afraid outtake. I can't see Headstrong fitting in with Much Afraid or Zoo, for that matter, which further testifies Jars' ability for creative diversions.

Just as impressive as the lyrics, Steve Mason's choppy, almost Morse codish guitar effects perfectly match the "I'm cool, 'nuf said!" mentality of the entire song. The smooth instrumental exchanges between Mason and Charlie Lowell almost demonstrate a dialogue between the truth and sham of the lyrics… and those harmonies!! The extended final chorus combines harmony with a thin sheet metal ribboning effect from the guitar. I look forward to watching Mr. Mason's shenanigans on stage with this new song. Who knows, maybe they'll add it to the festival set list this summer! Good idea.

Till next time, this is your Jarchives.com reporter, Anita Gnu Jarsong signing off!

HEADSTRONG
by Jars of Clay

Controlled, moderate, plastic
Aware and openly perfect,
To know everything
And not see anything

Ingest completely impressive,
You wear the law as a jacket
It keeps you warm,
It keeps you warm

Chorus:
And I don't know what you've been told but it's wrong
And I can't hold you when you fall so headstrong
Headstrong, headstrong

Headstrong!

Good enough, how sure a foundation,
Trip on, your graceful emotion
You remember it all,
Then cover it all

Chorus
(Repeat) Chorus followed by jammin' guitar bridge

It keeps you warm
It keeps you warm

Chorus
Headstrong, Headstrong
Headstrong, Headstrong
Headstrong, Headstrong

It's wrong!
