“…I hope you won’t give up what’s movin’ you inside…” – Sunny Days, Jars of Clay

Artistic, moving, inspirational, and much talent are the first few things that come to mind when thinking of the band Jars of Clay. Not only do Dan Haseltine, Charlie Lowell, Steve Mason, and Matt Odmark, reach their audience by remarkable songwriting and musicianship, but also with heartfelt performances they present during live events as well. The lyrics that flow from the lips of their mouths and music from each instrument played are injected into the hearts of many. Surely, I’m not the only one who has left feeling revitalized and encouraged in some way. A lyric, a word spoken, or the wonderful sounds that are crafted by their hands will hopefully leave you buoyant.

To the Roxy…

I’ve been to quite a few Jars of Clay shows, but this one was extra special for me. Didi and Marlo (fellow Jarks from Jarchives) flew down from San Jose to stay at my place for the occasion. We were then expected to meet with other fellow Jarks at the venue. I had met Didi and Marlo a few times before, but this was my first to encounter Jen, Ana, Crystal, and Alyssa face to face. I’m sure we were all thrilled to meet up with each other. Everyone was so sweet and fun to be around. My wish is to one-day meet up with other Jarchive pals from across the states. One day our Jarchive family will have a reunion. Dan & Matt - photo by Didi DeReuter

Doors opened and excitement filled the venue. We took our places in the front row (some of us in the second). Since the “Meet and Greet” event was to happen before the concert, we decided it would be best to inform the people around us what was happening, so we would hopefully have our spots back when we arrive again. Everyone around us was extremely kind and was okay with saving our spots for us. In return, we asked if they wanted anything signed or possibly a picture taken of Jars of Clay with their camera. Some took our offer and off we went…

Meet and Greet…

This was a “California Jarchive Jarks” meet and greet, for there was no one else at the meet and greet but us, with the exception of a friend of Dan Haseltine (Jason, it was nice meeting you. We hope to see you again). This was indeed a special event. Security walked the seven of us upstairs to where the guys (Jars) met us. The only complaint that I must give is where the meet and greet took place. A small and narrow hallway isn’t the best place for a greet event. Yes, some may describe it as quite cozy and intimate…but others could easily use “crowded” as well.

With Grammy’s under their belt and other great, exciting adventures that they journey on, it’s pleasing to encounter a band that still holds on to humility and kindness. These great guys are what you call “everyday” fellows. They are the type of people that you could share your thoughts with. For example, Didi and I easily expressed the intimidation Charlie once put on me with his “pretty eyes.” I will no longer focus on his nose or eyebrows no longer when speaking with him. The intimidation is out of the closet and has laid to rest. Matt was told about his resemblance of Viggo and of his Jesus like beard. Again, he received it with open arms. Luckily, Matt’s wife is a Viggo fan, so no worries there. Steve was wonderful and great as ever and Dan’s sweet spirit and thoughtfulness was evident. As we continued to chat and take photos, Steven Delopoulos took the stage and began the event with his skillful talents. We then closed up the meet and greet and took our spots back on the floor to begin the great event!

There are no words to describe Steven Delopoulos. He awed me with his amazing ability of speaking through his guitar. My eyes kept focus on his fingers and I was wonderfully impressed. His unique vocals complimented the style of sound he leaned towards. I will most certainly be watching out for him in the future. There are great things in store for this guy, so keep look out. After the show, Steven chatted with us and took some photos. He is such a good guy with an enormous heart. Good things are headed his way. Matt & Steve - photo by Didi DeReuter

The Curtain Raises…

From soft, mellow songs to live and energetic, Jars of Clay pours every ounce of themselves in what they do. “I Need You,” from their 2002 album “The Eleventh Hour,” began the excitement everyone anticipated for. It quickly was followed by “Flood.” Dan Haseltine’s passionate stage presence and vocals captures the audience in a way that I have never seen before. I enjoy looking around to view the expressions the listeners give and how they react to each song. “Flood” was birthed in 1995 and continues to electrify the crowd. I must admit that “Show You Love” is my favorite song from their recent album “Who We Are Instead.” That CD is filled with lots of great messages and it reminds me of a public journal that they agree to share.

Steve Mason honored us by singing a few parts on the closing song “I’ll Fly Away.” With his lap & pedal steel, he showed off his soothing vocals to us. I was very impressed throughout the concert in Steve’s adlibs, harmony and great gifts. Matt Odmark is such a magnificent guitar player. I really take pleasure in watching him “get into” the rhythm of everything. He has much to offer and I’m thankful he chose to share his talents with everyone. Charlie Lowell astonishes me with his piano playing. I found myself gazed on his fingers a few times; just watching him deliver the music notes into everyone’s ear. Piano, accordion, background vocals and so much more, Charlie is pure valuable. Dan Haseltine swooned me with his vocal adlibs on “I’m Alright.” I must say that his vocal range has increased tremendously and I love it! Aaron Sands (bass guitar) and Joe Porter (drums) offered their brilliant sounds from the stage as well. These guys play with dedication and intensity. I applaud them for their radiance.

After the closing song, Jen handed Dan a “Walk of Fame” star that she had made. Dan then took the star and held it up for everyone to see. He then proceeded to make a tiny speech to thank their “Star.” He cracks me up!

I can’t say enough of these guys. Dan, Charlie, Steve, Matt, Aaron, and Joe… “A big THANK YOU” from us.
